Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD) was inaugurated on 03 July 2018 by the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief Patron of BIMRAD Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed, NBP, OSP, BCGM, ndc, psc. The former Chief of Naval Staffs, founding members and executive committee members of BIMRAD, Directors of Naval Headquarters and other distinguished guests were present at the ceremony.
In his inauguration speech, The CNS paid his deepest tribute to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his visionary leadership who aptly comprehended the huge importance of sea for the development of our country. He recalls that under the dynamic leadership of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has established exclusive right over her lawful maritime territory, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Continental Shelf by resolving maritime boundary disputes with the neighbours. This delimitation has unfolded new opportunities for an optimum utilization of the sea and its huge untapped resources for the benefit of the country. He also mentioned that, under this prospective reality, BIMRAD has been established with the aim to act as a common platform to integrate and organize all maritime intellectuals, researchers and institutions for an optimum use of the sea. He urged all concerned organizations, researchers, intellectuals and maritime communities to extend cooperation, provide support and ignite initiatives for making the institution meaningful. He hoped that in the upcoming years, BIMRAD would be known as the ‘Centre of Excellence’ for the global maritime community. Rear Admiral Md. Khurshed Alam, MPhil, ndc, psc BN (retd), Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit), Ministry of Foreign Affairs in his speech said that, oceans offer endless bounty and is expected to meet the growing global food demand. He focused on the huge blue economy prospects of Bangladesh and emphasized on harvesting of the blue garden for the benefit of health, cosmetics, food, aquaculture, energy, industrial processes and many other sectors. The first Chief of Naval Staff, Captain Nurul Huq (retd) said, during the Liberation War, Bangladesh Navy (BN) played a very important role. He mentioned that BN has been developed in course of time and presently BIMRAD has the opportunity to contribute further for the sustainable development of the country through exploiting its maritime sector. Cdre Kazi Emdadul Haq, (L), BSP, ndu, psc BN (retd), Advisor, BIMRAD of that period presented the rundown on BIMRAD and briefly highlighted on the vision, mission, role and organogram of the institute. He opined that Bangladesh had tremendous prospects of exploration and exploitation of the living and non-living resources, marine transportation, tourism, biotechnology and many more.
