Participation in Training Program on "Coastal and Marine Resources Management Towards a Locally Adapted Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) Framework"

29 Apr 2024 To 30 Apr 2024

A two-day training program titled "Coastal and Marine Resources Management Towards a Locally Adapted Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) Framework" was held on 29-30 April 2024 at the Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Central Laboratory (APCRCL), Khulna University. Experts, researchers, and policymakers of different maritime sectors participated in this training program.

It was organized by the Fisheries & Marine Resource Technology Discipline (FMRT), Khulna University, Bangladesh, in cooperation with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, and the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN). The training aimed to enhance scientific capacity to understand the ocean and coastal dynamics using tools like Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) and Google Earth Engine (GEE) to develop a locally adapted MSP framework for Bangladesh's coastal areas.

The training program was organized under the project named "Scientific Capacity Building in Assessing the Coastal Dynamics Including the Influence of Climate Change in the Coastal Zone – Towards a Locally Adapted MSP Framework." The sessions covered following topics:

  • Coastal and Marine Resources Management Issues and Possible Adaption of MSP in Bangladesh
  • Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management
  • Coastal Processes and Engineering
  • Rapid Assessment of Coastal Dynamics
  • Geospatial Planning of Marine and Coastal Zone
  • Coastal and Marine Tourism –A Concern for MSP
  • Sea-Space Use in Bangladesh: Conflicts & Zoning for Resolution

The training program highlighted the urgency of addressing climate-induced coastal challenges through strategic planning and a locally adapted MSP framework for Bangladesh. Shahriar Khosnoor Prince, a dedicated Research Officer from BIMRAD, was among the participants and contributed actively to the training sessions.
